24 Sep, 2024 Sangkat (Salak Pat)
Sangkat (Salak Pat) is a Buddhist religious tradition practiced in many parts of Thailand, especially in the Central and Northern regions. It is similar to the "Tan Kuay Salak" tradition in the North but varies slightly in details depending on the locality. The term "Sangkat" refers to the offering of alms to Buddhist monks through a lottery system, where the monks are randomly chosen to receive the offerings. This method of offering is believed to help spread merit more equally and is often done in memory of deceased relatives,
dedicating the merit to them. The procedure of the Sangkat ceremony is as follows:
1. Devotees bring foodand essential items to be part of the merit-making event.
2. The offerings are arranged in trays or containers.
3. Names or numbers representing each offering are written and placed into the lottery (Sangkat).
4. The monks draw lots to determine which offering they will receive.
5. After the monks have received their offerings, the devotees perform a water-pouring ritual
to dedicate the merit to their departed relatives.
